Abstract
Beside the increasing public awareness of noise impacts on the environment and human health the public demand for a comprehensive communication of information on noise is growing. An important instrument in this context is the use of strategic noise maps, which can intelligibly inform the public about local noise problems and exposure. A study on behalf of the Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt, UBA) examined the usability of strategic noise maps for the fulfillment of this demand, analyzed shortcomings in form and content and shows possible enhancements. A concept for future noise mapping processes has been developed, where special noise characteristics can additionally be considered. The recommendations given for visual map encoding are based on the structure of the existing acoustical data
