Abstract
In optical 3D measurement technology area-based scanning systems are no more than everyday life. Object characteristics, such as size, shape and/or surface, are decisive parameters when selecting a suitable measuring system. Handheld 3D scanners, which are currently offered by a variety of different manufacturers, are increasingly available on the market. The range of prices starts at a few hundred Euros, but can also achieve several tens of thousands of Euros. In addition to being classified into a corresponding price segment, therefore, the information on the performance of a handheld 3D scanner is a major purchasing argument. The aim of the presented investigations is therefore to provide reproducible information about the geometric performance of the two selected, marketbased systems. In a collaboration of the Laboratory for Photogrammetry & Laser Scanning of the HafenCity University Hamburg and the Bochum University of Applied Sciences (Laboratory for Photogrammetry), geometric accuracy investigations were carried out with the HandySCAN 700 handheld 3D scanner from Creaform and the Mantis Vision F5-B, presented in this article. In the framework of these comparative investigations geometrically stable reference bodies were used. The appropriate reference data were acquired by measurement with two structured light projection systems (AICON smartSCAN and GOM ATOS I 2M). In the investigations of the different test scenarios the HandySCAN 700 emerged as a very accurate portable recording system, which was in the accuracy range of the reference systems, but also priced here. However, the cheaper Mantis Vision F5-B could not reach the accuracy range of the reference systems. The comprehensive results of the different test scenarios are presented and critically discussed in this contribution.
