Abstract
This paper gives advice on the calculation of bracing strength requirements for truss or diaphragm type bracing used to prevent lateral torsional buckling of girders subject to bending. An engineer-model to determine the bracing forces is derived from the differential equations describing bending and torsion of members with thin-walled cross section with respect to second order theory. Examples show the use of approximate formulas for the design of bracing and the mistakes that occur when using the common model "Compression chord = Member in compression".
