Abstract
The first part of the article presents current challenges to transportation and logistics management under the condition of changing retail and freight structures in the urban context. It lines out the necessity of a holistic approach recognizing divergent demands from transporation and logistics, ecology, and urbanism. As a center piece towards a new approach, so-called "Rail- City-Portals" will be presented as a novel type of intra-urban logistics hubs.
