Resource Management in Peri-urban Areas: Going Beyond Urban Metabolism

Project Details

Description

REPAiR – REsource Management in
Peri-urban Areas: Going Beyond Urban Metabolism aims at extending the concept of urban metabolism in three ways: (1) by exploring the roles of governance, territorial and sociocultural characteristics; (2) by strengthening the relationship between resource management and design, not only of products, but also of space; and (3) by including
participatory and science-based decision-making processes.
The HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU) is involved in all content activities of REPAiR with a focus on two areas: First, HCU is primarily responsible for developing and implementing decision models for all six case studies including the analysis of governance structures and decision processes. Second, HCU is in charge of the Hamburg case study focusing on peri-urban areas of the district Hamburg-Altona and the county of Pinneberg. The case area is characterized by a variety of peri-urban settlement types (for example urban cores, village centers, detached houses, and large housing estates), open spaces (for instance agricultural land, natural preservation areas), and a concentration of tree nurseries and horticultural farms. This case study aims at improving the waste metabolism with a priority on bio waste. Its PULL will develop eco-innovative solutions that take into account the different socio-economic, physical, and ecological characteristics of the above mentioned settlement types as well as the needs and interests of local citizens and stakeholders.
