Project Details

Description

The docus of the proposed study lies on the connection between urban-development resp. planning and the migration of the highly skilled and the unskilled as well as on the services and functions that ethnic colonies provide for people of that country of origin.
The thesis is that one important factor influencing athe choice of localion by the highly skilled migrants is the existence of products, services and infrastructure (e.g. resaurants, import-export-shops, community as well as the openess and internationality of the city, meaning the migrants well they can connect and integrate in the city life. Cultural difference and the lack of language competence can be a barrier for feeling at ease in the new environment. Ethnic colonies often form a bridge and first connection point for new immigrants. For the integration it is also important to have access to the new country's society and administrative system; this is a process with two sides involved, not only depending on the will of the immigrants but also on openess and help from the German population and the host city.
The above-mentioned issues on migration shall be explored ont the example of Hamburg, being one of the partners in the City-to-City network.
