Everyday Adaptations as Climate-Responsive Practices in Informal Settlements: Evidence from Mojo and Semanggi (Surakarta, Indonesia) and San Juan de Milaflores (Lima, Peru)

Activity: Lecture, Talk, Presentation & Exhibitions › Lecture, Talk, Presentation

Description

The presentation explored how residents in informal settlements adapt their homes and neighbourhoods through everyday practices that respond to changing needs and increasing climate challenges. Drawing on research from Surakarta (Indonesia) and San Juan de Milaflores (Lima, Peru), it examined how self-builders use local knowledge, available resources, and incremental modifications to improve comfort, ventilation, thermal conditions, moisture control, and spatial flexibility.

Through ethnographic research, interviews, and documentation of housing transformations, the presentation highlights how small-scale interventions—such as shading strategies, material adjustments, adaptive openings, and low-cost water management solutions—represent important forms of climate-responsive innovation. It argues that these locally grounded practices should be recognised as valuable contributions to more inclusive and context-sensitive approaches to housing, resilience, and urban transformation.
