Abstract

This paper explores the geographical dimensions of changing work patterns from a labour sociological perspective. Its diagnosis of transformation draws on two key debates: on the "erosion of standard employment patterns" and the "dissolution of boundaries in labour (and life)". The article first examines the concepts behind these debates, and then attempts to unravel two geographically informed dimensions inherent to them - labour mobility and the space-time organisation of everyday life - using empirical material from several studies of the cultural and media industries. It finally argues on a very general level that the emerging knowledge- and culture-based economy gives birth to a new rise of agglomeration economies, albeit in a socio-cultural rather than the classical sense. Agglomeration in this sense functions as both a compensation for and catalyst of changing work patterns.
