Abstract

Kathrin Meyer examines how structural, material, and documentation related
contingencies shape the planning of rooftop extensions on multifamily buildings
from the 1950s and 1960s. Using the case of Hamburg’s post war housing stock,
the chapter demonstrates how uncertainties in existing buildings and limited
information affect early planning processes and constrain the implementation of
ecologically motivated densification strategies.
